I purchased this plane with some trepidation after reading reviews online and in magazines about poor machining and paint problems. So far I have been pleasantly surprised with mine and have not experienced problems with either.
The blade arrived sharp enough to shave with and the perfectly flat back only required a light touch on the 8000 grit stone to make it shine.
I've noticed no problems with the machining anywhere. Mine took full width, chatter-free shavings right out of the box.
I noted the blade sits over a pin in the Norris style adjuster which keeps it pretty much immobilized. With that, you don't have to tighten the aluminium cap more than just a finger tight snug. The instruction book clearly states not to over-tighten the cap. I have to wonder if some of the reports of flaking paint on the caps are due to over-tightening.
About the only flaw I can see is the finish on the tote and knob. The knob shows a tiny bit of shine and it's apparent some kind of finish has been applied, but the tote appears just to be bare wood. If a finish was applied to the tote, it was so thin it just absorbed into the wood and disappeared. One of these days I'll wipe a little shellac on both to make them match.
I've primarily been using this plane on a shooting board. The low angle cuts end grain so much easier than my old #5 I'd been using I've wondered why I waited so long to buy one!
